BETWEEN 1 AND 29

When the minute hand is between the 1 and 29 minute mark you state the hour plus the minutes using "y".

Son las diez y diez.

Son las diez in diez

It is ten after ten.

Es la una y veinticinco.

Es la una y veinticinco

It is twenty five after one.

BETWEEN 31 AND 59

When the minute hand is between the 31 and 59 minute mark you state the approaching hour less the minutes using "menos".

Son las nueve menos veinte.

Son las nueve menos veinte

It is twenty to nine.

Son las doce menos cinco.

It is five to twelve.
